Question 6, Winter League 2022

This word X derives its origin owing to its shape, which at that point in time was compared to a part in male anatomy. Surprisingly, it also act as aphrodisiacs: foods that stimulate sex drive. South Americans call it “apple of the winter”( even though it has a couple nicknames ending with pear) which when combined with the Aztec word for ‘sauce’ plays a role in naming the famous condiment made using X . The said item has numerous misleading names, owing to the fact that it sounds like lawyer in Spanish and crocodile in Mexican (referring to the immigration of people to the new world).

ID X.

Question 3, Winter League 2022

The origin of this word dates back to the 15th Century, with its earliest reference being made in The Bible. It mainly comes in four different colours – blue, red, green and black, with various different shades of each existing.

Some have opted for blue associating it with the ‘New World’, whereas some have chosen red in reference to communism or unification. Some have chosen green as it is culturally associated with Islam and some have opted for black as it simply minimises the appearance of dirt and damage. However, these references are not true every time the particular colour has been chosen, with many having a myriad of personal and unknown reasons to choose their colour.

What is being talked about here?

Question 2, Winter League 2022

Above is the journal entry representing the first instance of something ‘actually’ happening. Common belief is that the above instance led to the present day use of the term X to refer to Y.

Contrary to common belief, the term X was first used by Edison in a letter to refer to Y, and the above entry is just a joke on the very term X.

Give me X and Y.

Question 1, Winter League 2022

You’ve heard of Disney cartoons but have you heard of lost Disney cartoons? Walt Disney, the man himself, went through a lot of ups and downs before turning lemon into lemonade by creating Mickey Mouse. It was noticed however that Mickey, Minnie, and the others bore resemblance to some of his previous works, namely a character by the name of X. Interestingly, years later another show starring a blue protagonist by the same name began to air on Nickelodeon, a favourite among many children. However the two characters were vastly different in species. Walt’s producer at the time, Charles Mintz felt that there were too many cat characters on television and wanting something different, made a few adjustments to X’s design and ended up with their final design.

ID X and what was his/her species?

Summer Mini-League 1, Question #5

X is a city in the northern parts of the country it is located in, which was part of the French colonies up until the middle of the 20th century. X is often compared to another city, with both cities being home to a famous structure designed by the same individual.

The French were quite proud and boastful of their civil and tidy houses in the city. However these houses were extremely tall and narrow, resulting in lower property taxes. During the early 20th century, the French faced a major issue due to the plumbing system they had introduced in the city, as it became a breeding ground for rats. This problem sparked a rather peculiar and witty form of rebellion from the colonized.

The French administration then recruited a team of hunters and set up a rat bounty programme, in which the rat hunters would get paid for every rat tail they procured, as they didn’t want to dispose off the body. However, these hunters outwitted the French, and started clipping off the rat tails, and letting the rats free. Some even went as far as to breeding rats! By the time the French realized what had happened, it was too late and the bubonic plague hit the city.

Identify the city (X).

Winter League #1

These stone throats were inspired by an European dragon folk tale encouraging conversion to Christianity. These were often spotted on church pillars and cleverly served a two-found purpose for the clergy:

1) to inspire a visual fear of the horrors of hell in the largely illiterate Medieval European populace and portray the safety from them that their faith provides

2) to encourage conversion to Christianity as they were often shaped in the form of pagan gods to make the churches seem more familiar and welcoming to pagan worshippers

Name this Gothic architectural concept designed to protect the work of men from the wrath of heaven.
